The San Francisco 49ers have enabled standout wide receiver Deebo Samuel to pursue a trade to another team. Samuel appeared to play a less part near the end of the season, and it looks he is looking for a new team.
The shocking report has now been followed by a statement from Samuel himself.
Adam Schefter disclosed the statement Samuel made after the trade request. “It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle (Shanahan) because of the relationship that we have,” Samuel told me today. “But I need to do what is best. I’m grateful to the Niners for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but I believe it’s best if we find another team.
” Samuel discusses the hardship of convincing 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan that he wanted to be traded but knew it was best for his career going ahead. Prior to his troubles in the 2024 season, Samuel was one of the league’s most dynamic dual-threat receivers.
Samuel could have plenty of suitors in the coming days and weeks, especially given how he has been employed in the rushing and pass-catching game. Samuel’s potential suitors are the New England Patriots, Cincinnati Bengals (if they let Tee Higgins walk), Atlanta Falcons, and many others.
Samuel played his whole six-season career with the 49ers. Despite missing only two games due to injury in 2024, he was starting to have a slow year in terms of production. He had 670 receiving yards, three touchdowns, 136 rushing yards, and one touchdown in 2024. Samuel’s performance has dropped significantly, as he has 892 receiving yards, seven touchdowns, 225 rushing yards, and five touchdowns.
The 49ers struggled in 2024, finishing 6-11. This is a far way from competing in the Super Bowl in 2023. San Francisco was expected to return to the major exhibition, but this was not the case.
The 49ers faced lots of difficulty. Samuel, George Kittle, and Brandon Aiyuk all sustained injuries during the regular season. Unlike the others, Aiyuk had a season-ending ACL tear. With these and other issues, the team struggled to get started in 2024.
They will now face the 2025 season without Samuel. Things will get intriguing for the team as they enter free agency.
