Brock Purdy undoubtedly believes he is worth at least $61 million per season, given that he has achieved more in the playoffs than Dak Prescott, who is paid $60 million on average.
The 49ers may believe they can keep Purdy for significantly less than his apparent market worth because no other team appears to be interested in trading for him. The 49ers do not have to negotiate against themselves, and Purdy is coming off a bad season. If he wants the big money, he can get it next year once he returns to Pro Bowl form.
If he wants an extension now, he must offer the 49ers a bargain. That is why Spotrac does not expect the 49ers and Purdy to reach a deal on an extension this summer.
“Prediction: The 49ers offer Brock Purdy a well-below-market three-year, $105 million extension, with $50 million guaranteed,” says Spotrac analyst Michael Ginnitti. “Purdy declines the offer, holds out most of the summer, then returns to play on his $5M salary for 2025, setting up free agency or a potential franchise tag in 2026.”
This seems plausible, but I doubt Purdy would hold out because it would jeopardize the 49ers’ season. It’s one thing for him to wager on himself and turn down what he considers a lowball offer. It’s another thing completely for him to miss offseason practices. At that point, the 49ers would need to find another quarterback.
