An Ohio State Buckeyes transfer linebacker has officially chosen his future team.
Not long ago, it was believed that Ohio State might lose linebacker Gabe Powers to the NCAA transfer site. Powers appeared to have the potential to be an important member of the team’s defense at one point, but that has yet to happen. Due to a lack of consistent playing time, Powers chose to pursue it elsewhere.
Powers has reportedly determined where he will play the next phase of his college career. According to 247 Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Powers is anticipated to move to the Kansas State Wildcats.
Powers will finish his Ohio State career with 12 total tackles, one defended pass, and an interception returned for a touchdown this season. Clearly, they are not the numbers that the Buckeyes expected him to produce during his time with the team.
It’s sad to see him depart, but he’s joining a strong football program where he can hopefully achieve great success. When Powers committed to Ohio State, he was a four-star recruit from Marysville, Ohio, and On3 Sports placed him as the No. 9 linebacker in the 2022 recruiting class. He was also ranked as the No. 115 overall recruit in the US and the No. 7 in Ohio.
So far this offseason, the Buckeyes have had a large number of athletes leave for the transfer portal. Ryan Day and his staff have a lot of work to do. If they want to return to being one of the best teams in the country, they will need to bring in a few excellent transfer portal pieces on their own.
So far, they have failed to achieve the majority of their primary objectives. All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what the remainder of the transfer portal period holds for Ohio State. Hopefully, they don’t lose too much skill and can capitalize on any market swings.
Only time will tell, but Powers is the most recent Buckeye to find a new home for the 2025 season.
