Following Brock Purdy’s brief injury scare last weekend, the NFL is holding the player responsible for the 49ers quarterback’s exit accountable. Darrell Taylor, a Bears edge rusher, was fined $16,883 for his hit on Purdy in the third quarter of San Francisco’s 38-13 victory over Chicago. Taylor made contact with Purdy’s neck while awkwardly taking him down after the quarterback had already tossed the ball.

Purdy missed only one play, returning to the field and tearing up the Bears’ defense for 325 yards, two touchdowns, and no turnovers in San Francisco’s blowout win.
Taylor was first picked by the Seattle Seahawks in 2020 and spent four seasons in the NFC West until signing a one-year, $3.1 million contract with Chicago this offseason. The NFL has stressed quarterback safety, and the fine imposed on Taylor seemed to reinforce that message following his violent hit on Purdy.
