Aaron Rodgers hasn’t played much for the Buffalo Bills since he joined the New York Jets in 2023, and they may have already faced him for the last time as a divisional rival.
Last season, Rodgers was injured early in the season opener against the Bills. Four plays into the game, he tore his Achilles, and he missed the rest of the season. On October 14, he returned to the field as the clubs faced the Bills, losing 23–20.
However, given the recent firings of the team’s general manager and head coach, Rodgers now faces an unclear future in the midst of organizational instability in New York. According to recent sources, Rodgers may be benched for the rest of this season and is expected to leave the Jets following this one.
Jets owner Woody Johnson has “lost confidence in Rodgers’ ability to lead the team to their first playoff berth in 14 years,” according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, and he may be done with the seasoned quarterback.
According to Russini, “I’ve been informed that no decisions have been made yet, but it seems more likely that the four-time MVP, who is injured, could be benched or placed on injured reserve over the next few weeks, signaling the end of his disastrous time with the Jets.” “If Rodgers is cut in-season, some leaguers say they won’t be shocked.”
This season, Rodgers has had inconsistent play, throwing for 2,442 yards, 17 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. If Rodgers has been benched by the time the Bills meet the Jets on December 29, a familiar face may return. Journeyman quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who started three seasons for the Bills from 2015 to 2017, is Rodgers’ backup.
There is a potential the Bills will see Rodgers again in the future, even though it is still uncertain if they will see him in the December game. Rodgers wants to play again in 2025, but probably not for the Jets, according to Russini.
Long before they meet the Jets at the end of this year, the Bills have a chance to win the AFC East for the fifth time in a row. The Miami Dolphins are now 5-6, four games behind the Bills at 9-2, despite their victory over the New England Patriots on November 24. With any two wins or Dolphins defeats, the Bills would secure the division.
The club’s excellent status is an accomplishment that speaks to the strength of the entire team, according to Bills head coach Sean McDermott.
According to the Democrat & Chronicle, McDermott expressed his gratitude. I was also humbled by it. To achieve what we have, it takes a large team of people. Again, I’m simply really appreciative of it.
However, the Bills aren’t celebrating anything just yet. After defeating the then-unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs last week, quarterback Josh Allen emphasized that they still have a lot of work to do to reach their goals.
“We’re 9-2. Last time I checked, nine victories definitely won’t get you into the playoffs,” Allen said.
