A new trade proposal suggests the Detroit Lions could address their pass-rushing woes by acquiring a $51 million edge rusher from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a pair of draft picks.
Lions fans have been eagerly waiting for the team to bolster a pass rush that, in 2024, saw only two players notch more than four sacks. Despite the need for improvement, no significant additions have been made, and the team even parted ways with one of their few productive pass rushers.
At the start of free agency, there was hope Detroit would make a splash to enhance its defensive front. However, most top options have since signed elsewhere, leaving many to speculate that the Lions will address the position in the first round of this year’s draft.
But Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton has presented an alternative. In a piece highlighting potential surprise trades, Moton proposed that the Lions acquire Eagles edge rusher Bryce Huff in exchange for a fourth-round and seventh-round pick in the upcoming draft.
While intriguing, trading for Huff comes with risk. The edge rusher signed a $51 million contract with the Eagles last offseason, a deal largely based on his breakout 2023 campaign with the New York Jets, where he recorded 10 sacks.
However, Huff’s overall career production has been inconsistent, totaling just 10 sacks across his other four NFL seasons. In 2024, Huff managed only two sacks and 20 pressures in 12 games, ranking 102nd and 87th among edge rushers according to Pro Football Focus.
Given the Lions’ reluctance to spend big on proven veterans or take chances on more affordable options with question marks, it’s unlikely they’d gamble on Huff, who has just one standout season to his name. While Detroit will undoubtedly make a move to strengthen their edge rush this offseason, this particular trade doesn’t seem to be the answer.
