Whatever LeBron James wants, he generally gets. That’s been the case for the majority of “The King’s” career. He’s been able to call the shots and have teams adapt to his demands and desires. However, things appear to be changing in Los Angeles, as Charles Barkley recently remarked on NBA TV’s GameTime.
Every team Bron has been on has had to make personnel judgments based primarily on the latter’s preferences. To optimize LeBron’s and the team’s chances of winning, James must surround himself with players who possess specialized skill sets.
Whether it’s sharpshooters who thrive off the defensive attention he draws, playmakers who can relieve his load of creating every possession, or defensive specialists capable of defending the opposition team’s greatest player, LeBron’s squads are frequently assembled in a certain manner.
However, things have changed this season. According to sources, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka kept the 6’9″ forward out of the loop until the decision was made to acquire Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic in exchange for All-Star big man Anthony Davis.
“I do think this kind of sets the end to, like, LeBron James making all the decisions,” Chuck said during a conversation about the startling deal that was finalized and publicized on Sunday. “They are saying, ‘Hey, we love you, LeBron, but we’re going to start doing what’s best for the Lakers.'” That’s what I received out of this trade for the Lakers,” the Hall of Famer said.
While the prospect of the Lakers landing a superstar like “Luka Legend” is undeniably appealing, the fit seems somewhat odd. First, James and Doncic enjoy having the ball in their hands. Second, trading AD leaves the Lakers with a gaping vacuum in the shaded lane that no other player on the team can cover.
One thing is certain: the Lakers finally have someone who can lead the franchise for the foreseeable future. From Magic Johnson to Shaquille O’Neal to Kobe Bryant, the Lakers have always had a great capable of dominating games and leading them to titles.
However, the Lakers’ success is not solely determined by their record. With this transaction, they position themselves for success beyond LeBron’s time with the franchise. At 40, James is unquestionably one of the league’s best players, but his reign as a dominant force on the court will come to an end. Adding Doncic provides the Lakers with a young and talented superstar who can step up and fill that position when the time comes.
“It appears to me that they are saying, ‘Hey, do you know what? LeBron is on his final legs. “Let’s start looking for a star for the future,” Barkley suggested. It’ll be exciting to see how Luka and LeBron combine their talents on the field. After all, they are two basketball experts and once-in-a-lifetime talents who are now teammates.
