The Detroit Lions are having their most successful season in franchise history in 2024. Detroit is 14-2 for the first time in franchise history, and it enters Week 18 with a chance to win the NFC playoffs’ top seed. The Lions defeated the 49ers 40-34 on Monday night in a vengeance game for last year’s NFC Championship loss.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell discussed his choice to play his starters on Monday against the 49ers. Campbell stated that he pondered resting starters after the Vikings defeated the Packers on Sunday, according to Ari Meirov. The outcome of that game rendered Detroit’s Week 17 matchup inconsequential to postseason seeding. Instead, their Week 18 matchup with the Vikings will determine the NFC North division winner and No. 1 seed in the NFC.
Campbell ultimately chose to play all of the players who had spent the entire week practicing. He described it as a difficult decision, but emphasized that “we love it hard.” “I ended up deciding the right thing to do was to play those guys,” Campbell said after the game, according to the Associated Press. “We owe it to the team.” That was tough. I think the most important thing is that we wanted to do things better than we did the previous week, and we did.
Detroit now has a chance to secure postseason home field advantage with a win over Minnesota in Week 18. Campbell wouldn’t want it any other way.”This is just fairytale stuff,” Campbell said.
The Lions used their aggressiveness to secure a big win on Monday Night Football. Detroit converted two of three fourth-down attempts against San Francisco. One of those conversions culminated in a big touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown, which the Lions urgently needed to get back in the game. “It’s the only way we know.
“Just go find a way to win,” Lions quarterback Jared Goff said. “This is how our season ended last year. There are a lot of people on this squad who were there last year and wanted to get back at them, even if it was meaningless for both them and us.”
Lions safety Kerby Joseph also played an important part in this game. He brought in two second-half interceptions, allowing Detroit to edge ahead of San Francisco. Detroit can now focus completely on their Week 18 game against Minnesota.
