The Detroit Lions are 12-2 this season and are seeking to rebound after being defeated 48-42 by the Buffalo Bills last week. They not only lost the game, but they also lost several key players to injury. RB David Montgomery (knee), DL Alim McNeill (knee), CB Carlton Davis (jaw), and Khalil Dorsey (leg) all exited the game for various reasons.
McNeill is done for the year due to a ruptured ACL, and DL Aidan Hutchinson is out for the season after breaking his tibia and fibula in Week 6. This club has an NFL-high 21 players on injured reserve, which does not bode well for a team projected to make a Super Bowl run in the playoffs. The Lions are depending on the depth they acquired throughout the summer, but they may be given a good opportunity to add another presence in the trenches.
Calais Campbell Might Be Released by the Miami Dolphins
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, if the Dolphins are ousted from the playoffs, they will release DL Calais Campbell so that he can join a contender. The Dolphins are 6-8 on the season, but they need to win their next three games and receive help from other teams to make the playoffs. According to NFL.com, Miami has a 6% chance of making the playoffs.
The remaining games on the schedule are against the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, and New York Jets. They may be favored in two of the three games, but the odds are stacked against them. Campbell, 38, continues to play at a high level for the Dolphins. He’s made 43 total tackles, including ten for loss, five pass deflections, and four sacks. According to PFF, Campbell has an 83.4 overall grade (7th among 214 eligible defensive lineman) and an 86.6 run-defense mark (1st among 214 eligible defensive linemen). He would fill a significant hole on the defensive front and help Detroit recover from some of its recent losses.
This is something to keep an eye on over the next few weeks, but Campbell is likely to enter the free agent market. If he does, Detroit should make a priority of signing him.
