The Atlanta Braves were allegedly very interested in signing Milwaukee Brewers free agent shortstop Willy Adames, but they were unsuccessful in their pursuit. Adames has agreed to a deal for over $200 million with the San Francisco Giants. As a result, the Braves will have to look for alternative infield options to fill the shortstop position, particularly given Orlando Arcia’s troubles in 2024. While there may not be a perfect candidate available, the Braves will examine unconventional options.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently proposed that Atlanta pursue free agency Houston Astros Alex Bregman. Bregman is likely to sign a four-year, $119 million contract, although reports suggest it could be closer to $200 million.
“We should preface this by saying it almost definitely won’t happen, but there’s a strong case for Alex Bregman as a top Braves target,” Kline said. “His price tag may match or exceed Adames’ $182 million, so tread carefully, but Bregman is a two-time World Series champion with over a decade of postseason experience. That should appeal to an Atlanta club aiming to reach the summit.
The primary difficulty here is positional fit. Bregman is not a shortstop, but he has allegedly stated a desire to switch positions if the appropriate opportunity arises.
In Atlanta, Bregman could play second base, allowing Ozzie Albies to switch to shortstop. While the Braves have a need at shortstop, spending $200 million on a 30-year-old Bregman may not be the greatest decision. I believe that teams such as the Astros, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, and New York Mets will be too aggressive in pursuing Bregman for the Braves to compete successfully.
