The Golden State Warriors have gotten off to a hot start this season. They have a 12-4 record and are tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the top seed in the Western Conference.
Many people did not expect the Warriors to be a top team in the West this season after being 10th in the West last season and barely making the Play-In round, especially after Klay Thompson left in free agency. Instead, Golden State has been one of the NBA’s greatest teams this season, led by Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
The Warriors have had a lot of success on both sides of the ball, scoring 117.6 points per game and allowing opponents to average 108.8 points per game, both of which are in the top ten in the NBA. While the Warriors have begun strong, they could still attempt to upgrade their team before the February trade deadline by acquiring Paul George, a player they were intrigued in previous offseason. The Philadelphia 76ers acquired George through a sign-and-trade from the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Warriors were also interested in George, but did not reach the Clippers’ asking price. With Philadelphia failing to start the season, George might end himself in the Bay Area if the Sixers collapse.
The Warriors could potentially trade Andrew Wiggins, De’Anthony Melton, Jonathan Kuminga, Kevon Looney, Lindy Waters III, and draft picks to Philadelphia in exchange for George, Andre Drummond, and Kyle Lowry.
The Sixers have opened the season 3-13 and are 14th in the Eastern Conference. By sending George to Golden State, they would add a mix of seasoned and youthful talent to continue competing as long as Joel Embiid remains healthy. By signing George, the Warriors would form a new big three with Curry and Green, allowing them to continue to compete for the championship. They would also acquire a much-needed big man in Drummond and a dependable backup point guard in Lowry.
They would have to give up Kuminga, but he might go in free agency because they were unable to reach an agreement before the season. Of course, one disadvantage of adding George is his injury history. He has only been in eight games this season and has only played 70 or more games once in the previous five seasons, but if he remains healthy, he might help the Warriors win another championship in the Curry and Steve Kerr era.
