The San Francisco 49ers’ dismal season continued on Sunday afternoon when they suffered their second consecutive defeat at Lambeau Field, falling to the Green Bay Packers 38-10.
Brock Purdy’s absence due to a shoulder injury sustained in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks did not help. Purdy was replaced by backup Brandon Allen, and the 49ers struggled to muster much of an offensive effort, managing only 241 total yards, including just 44 on the run with a healthy Christian McCaffrey.
Deebo Samuel Sr., the 49ers’ wide receiver, refused to talk to the media following the humiliating defeat. The former first-team All-Pro was obviously disappointed with his team’s performance, as he only managed one catch for 21 yards.
NFL fans strongly reacted negatively to Samuel’s choice. The former South Carolina standout’s choice sent a bad message to his teammates, as he had earned the title of team captain. Social media was used by fans to express their opinions.
“Pretty weak for someone who wears the C on his chest,” one fan commented. “
Not surprising; it demonstrates a lack of accountability,” remarked another.
“Captain Deebo argues with teammates, does not show up for media interviews, and plays like trash. “Give Jennings that C patch,” remarked a third.
“He needs to go; I’m done with him,” added a fourth. “Getting paid $24 million a year and he’s a captain, not a good look,” was the fifth addition.
“This is a very poor look. Dude is the captain. “Having bad games or stretches happens to the best; leaders accept it and face the firing squads,” added a sixth.
Samuel hasn’t lived up to his three-year, $71.5 million contract, which he signed during the 2022 offseason.
The receiver has 34 receptions for 511 yards and just one touchdown.
However, the 49ers retain the option of releasing him after 2024. But if they keep him around, he will be imprisoned until 2027. San Francisco is currently 5-6 on the season and will miss the NFL playoffs. It has another tough battle in Week 13 against the 9-2 Buffalo Bills.
